1 Reviews of the Ocean View RT2
By: GLawes Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2006 Rating:
This is our second Ocean View RT, the first was the original RT1 a tent we loved but unfortunately was prone to leaking and had a very noisy vent flap. Jack wolfskins after sales service was exceptional, the end result being a nice new RT2.
These are beautifully detailed tents, with construction quality and finish far beyond anything we have seen elsewhere, however.
We have used the RT2 four times, after two trips some of the windows were showing signs of disintegration and after the third trip all but one of the windows had gone the same way. Quite bizarre it looked like a chemical reaction, the plastic was quite literally turning to powder. The manufacturer again took it back promptly and reglazed the tent completely and once again all of this outside of the warranty period.
Our latest trip involved a reasonable amout of rain and on occasions a brisk wind, unfortunately the RT2 reacted badly to both, leaking substantially through numerous seams, in addition the vent flap failed to prevent water reaching the closed vent and from running through its zip in a steady flow straight into the tent. We returned from a short walk to find the bedroom completely flooded.
The breeze also took its toll reshaping the otherwise very nice aluminium poles, in fairness Jack Wolfskin describe this as a valley tent, so not suitable for use in bad weather. But to be on a site surrounded by campers in a variety of cheap looking tents coping effortlessly with the conditions we felt rather embarrassed by the mess that had once been our pride and joy.
I have calculated that this is the 12th tent I have owned in the 40 years I have been camping and frankly I have never had any that perform as poorly as this one did to relatively mild wind and rain.
We are now looking for a new tent, as I said we have loved these tents, they ooze quality and in good weather conditions work fine, but the most fundamental requirement of any tent is protect from the weather and in this respect the Jack Wolfskin failed really quite dramatically.
